What is your big idea for a smarter city?
Public / Private Transportation and Sprawl
May 08, 2013 Ian M10

The United States largely grew up with the automobile and because of this communities are spread out into vast areas. Witness Los Angeles, big box stores, strip malls, suburbs, etc... There is a lot of work going on in the urban planning community now to make cities denser, more walkable, and bike friendly. But you can't just turn a major 6 or 8 lane road into a 2 lane road with bike lanes and not expect some serious transportation problems. I'd like to know where people are going and why. Work, School, Shopping, Recreation? And how can those be turned into more local activities that can be accessed by bicycle or walking first, then public transit, and finally car.
