What is your big idea for a smarter city?
Parking sensors connected to a mobile app

Although something like this might already be in the works, I think large car-oriented cities such as Columbus, Ohio could really benefit from a parking-assist mobile app. Much of the parking in Columbus and especially in the Ohio State campus area is street and metered parking. Although it is much more sightly than eyesore parking lots, you are not always guaranteed a spot, causing drivers to meander through the streets looking for spots, wasting their time and adding to the existing traffic. If each metered spot contained an embedded sensor in the pavement, they could sense when a vehicle was parked over it. Then, the sensor could send this information to the mobile app, which would show which spots are vacant and which are filled, allowing drivers to quickly and easily locate a place to park.
