What is your big idea for a smarter city?
Integrating WELLNESS needs with Urban/Suburban Streets redesign
May 09, 2013 Gopal R

The World is increasingly becoming obese and most health professionals agree that human beings need to get at least a minimum of 150 minutes per week of healthful activities, best accomplished by WALKING. Yet, many Urban/Suburban streets even in the US do not have contiguous SIDEWALKS/FOOTPATHS and traffic light management is often PEDESTRIAN unfriendly. Walking next to where one lives or works or walks/bikes/takes public transportation will significantly improve health and reduce HEALTHCARE COSTS. Many MEGACITIES in developing countries even have prominent streets without sidewalks, creating extreme danger for pedestrians and poorer segments of society who walk or take public transportation. SMARTCITY without healthy people or pedestrian friendly mobility will suck up a lot of valuable resources towards health related issues, and cannot be considered all that SMART just because of a lot of gizmos are used, here and there!
