What do you think the role of government should be in developing and promoting urban technology?

I can't devote as much time to this post as I'd like. But I wanted to make sure someone explicitly mentioned the idea of government-as-platform. It is similar to the philosophies of the market, except it acknowledges that government enables/catalyzes resource/app/systems creation by i) the data it releases ii) the stories it tells about its data (data team) and iii) the cogent needs for IT-enabled solutions as articulated (read: blogged about) by individual government departments/agencies. Government sets the scene and provides incentives or in-kind resources encourage the creation of needed city infrastructures and tools. Ongoing discussion of the city's big picture and its "dataspace" are key. also important, the City needs to acknowledge the presence of various data authors and promote a vision for integrated use.
