Washington DC and the surrounding areas rely heavily on technology in our transportation infrastructure. High-Occupancy or Toll (HOT) lanes on the beltway allow commuters the option of traveling outside the congestion (either with lots of people in the car, or paying a variable toll). Our metro system uses RFID SmartTrip passes to collect faires to ride the subway and bus. You can also track when the next bus or train will arrive at your station. Bike and Car sharing both use electronic passes to access and pay for vehicles, and I no longer have to carry change in my car to park downtown. I enter my space number into a smartphone app, and the "meter" is automatically paid.
