Adjusting pedestrian crossing timings to predicted demand from nearby sensors and local decision making [Project undertaken in Birmingham in the UK]

This project highlighted the importance of low wait times for an invitation to cross at pedestrian crossings. Sensors a short distance from the crossing were considered as a method to predict crossing demand and were tested hypothetically using video surveys, extracts of which are included in the video report (link below). Engagement included local residents and relevant organisations. In addition to sensors the range in which wait times can vary would be set by planners remotely in response to changes in land use etc. Further developments such as facial recognition were also considered.
