As previous studies have shown, a typical city setting increases stress levels on most humans, while natural settings relax and decrease stress. Based on this assumption, the smart city has to provide a right mixture of technology and nature. The current project aims to present a way for city dwellers to become more aware of the natural places in their cities, such as parks, zoos and botanical gardens. It is assumed that a majority of a city’s population visits these types of places from time to time, but the lack of information about the observed flora or fauna is not engaging enough for the fast-paced and information-hungry observer. “Urban Explorer” is an app meant to Add entertainment and stimulate citizens to visit the outdoors. Its main purpose is to facilitate flora or fauna recognition based on photographs snapped by users with their smart-phones.
