This idea is based on (or to support) EPA's Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) program.
In this program, residents are charged for collection of municipal solid waste (ordinary trash) based on amount they throw away.
Each house will get trash can from city which will have contact less Smart Card. This smart card contains information about the can (eg. Trash can id, weight of the can). In the central database, this can is assigned to the home owner.
Trash/garbage collecting vehicle will have a fork lift platform equipped with load cell to measure the
weight. Controller box with card reader is attached near platform. It will read information from smart
card and record the weight of garbage-container (with garbage). This information is then transmitted to central server through wireless communication. It can also be uploaded to server when vehicle reaches its station (through
wired communication).
Homeowners are billed every month based on weight of trash.
