If/how can gamification influence participation?

The outcomes of participation span over long periods of time. For this reason, a participant might easily loose interest to participate. By gamifying the experience, participants receive short-term incentives to motivate engagement

On another note, gamification can also create frustration because not all participants can achieve top positions and might decide to jettison participation alltogether. I wish there were more talk about such contradictions and how to balance them out.
