The advent of low cost microprocessor platforms such as the Arduino and the Raspberry Pi, and the development of low-cost sensing and wireless technologies has started a revolution in networked physical computing. At the same time, the rise of citizen science, also known as crowd-science, has transformed ordinary citizens into data-hungry prosumers. My project seeks to exploit the confluence of these events to create a network of low-cost environmental sensors placed throughout my hometown of Oakland, California. By collecting and then publishing environmental data to the web, not only can we start to collect and measure the effects of increasing industrialization, citizens begin to also understand the impact that their individual decisions have on the environment. By pulling the curtain back, we empower citizens to make choices that not only lower lessen their own environmental footprint, but allow them to have an educated voice in the debate over environmental policy.
