For example pumping water from a reservoir, through pipes and directly to homes and neighborhoods saves city's from the potential problems of drought, access to ground water, access to streams or rivers.

Traffic is inherently chaotic, employing traffic lights organizes the transportation and saves people from that chaos. Synchronizing those traffic lights even further organizes that traffic.

The use of antibiotics saves people from dealing with the problems of infection or disease. Chlorine saves our water supply from bacteria. Pesticides and herbicides save us from crop failure. (that last one is a bit questionable considering colony collapse disorder)

The internet saves us from isolation due to long distances and transportation times.
