How is your city getting smarter?
San Francisco uses mobile phones to improve food security
Mar 09, 2015 Mark B107

A Code for America project took a design-first approach to understand why thousands of food stamp users kept falling off the system, needing to be re-added, and losing their benefits in the meantime. The approach ended up realizing that a mobile phone with text alert system was much more efficient and engaging with marginalized residents than the existing paper/mail system or how a smart phone app-based solution would be.

I like that this project started with a design/user experience focus to understanding community needs, and that the rush to "create an app for that" was tempered with a realization that in most cases the target user would not have a smart phone and would only be able to receive texts.
