How can we engage effectively?
Let public call the shots more often
May 12, 2013 Candace B3

Local governments usually just do their work. Sometimes they will consult with the public on certain issues but they get to choose content, venue, schedule, format, and often who is invited even. These are usually short information sessions with little opportunity for rebuttal or feedback. Group presentations can be made to council once a month for 10 minutes if you can get onto the agenda but once again no feedback. Perhaps they should open up this process and let individuals and groups take control of these discussions and make decisions about the parameters. Allow much longer periods of time on a more regular basis and have them open to the public at large. Televise them on the local cable tv and the local government website, even have a smartphone app so that they can be followed by phone.
