Smart cities monitoring air pollution

In New York City I have noticed electronic grey boxes in the subway system and I was told they were used to monitor the air. The subway system is over 100 years old and it gets extremely hot on the surface lines. Also, NY police department use sensors similar to what Professor Schoff discussed to check the air quality. Overall, I believe NYC have a good recycling program and they remind New Yorkers twice a year through media like post cards and television to recycle.
