Encourage public transport and facilitate walking/cycling

Vehicular traffic is the single most pollutant in cities apart from industrial pollution. Smart cities can encourage citizens to use public transport by providing eco-friendly mass/bus rapid transit systems and discouraging usage of cars and other fossil-fuel powered transport.

City administrators must also provide for safe footpaths and bicycle paths and even incentivize those who commute by these means. Incentivizing citizens through gamification by way of badges, discount coupons, etc. would help bring a quick behavioural change in citizens in favor of public transport.
