How can smart cities address climate change?
Awareness and Coordination of Resource Use
Mar 18, 2014 Justin G14

I think one of the most revolutionary aspects of smart cities is their ability to make us aware of how we're using our energy and resources as well as ensuring that the overarching functions of the city are resource/energy efficient. Smart cities technology used to combat climate change in ways typically unseen by the citizens who benefit from them. This includes things such as lights that turn off when no one is occupying a room, waste system which automatically sort and recycle trash, and buildings which help clean the air of particulates and produce their own energy via renewable sources. Additionally, these technologies help us make more conscious about our resource and energy use through making us aware of the levels at which we use them. This was most clearly articulated in the smart meter technologies installed by IBM in Dubuque, IA.
