Reporting Crimes Via Twitter
May 14, 2013 Victoria D3

Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio already provides a safety alert system where it notifies students via phone, text, or email about a concern on campus. However, the school only sends an alert when it believes there is an immediate threat - many crimes go unreported officially by the university. Instead, I've noticed my friends on Twitter tweeting information about building closings or evacuations to help others when OSU didn't send any type of information. For example, there was a recent bomb threat that turned out to be nothing, but OSU did not send students any information about it. Instead, I logged onto Twitter and saw students had posted that the Union was evacuated and a stretch of road was closed. I would not have known this information if not for social media.
